I made a public service announcement last year that you should judge a book by its cover, and I'm here to reaffirm that assertion with eight more stunning novels.
While it's not common to see book covers in art galleries, the books on this list make a strong case for treating covers as art because to their inventive detailing, vibrant colors, and occasional optical illusions. Here are eight novels that demonstrate that you should not just assess a book by its cover, but that you should also appreciate book covers as works of art.
Circus of Wonders
CIRCUS OF WONDERS is a feminist spin on the circus story about Nell, a lady sold to ringmaster Jasper Jupiter as a "leopard girl" due to birthmarks on her skin.
Nell fights for her place in the world when her fame expands across the country.
At first glimpse, this cover had me hooked hook, line, and sinker.
I'm a big lover of the Victorian circus style, and this cover gives it a new twist with purple and blue coloring set against a gold moon and stars.
The design also evokes a sense of intrigue—who is the mysterious figure behind the curtain wearing the red hat?
And who is the individual I just observed in the background five minutes ago?
To understand CIRCUS OF WONDERS, you must first read it.

End of the World House
In END OF THE WORLD HOUSE, Bertie’s world is crashing down around her: her job is depressing; her best friend, Kate, is moving away from her; and there’s a series of escalating world conflicts. As a last hurrah for the end times, Bertie and Kate decide to embark on a trip to Paris, but when a mysterious stranger offers to take them on a tour of the Louvre, the two become involved in a dangerous time loop.
The cover designer took the book’s distinct plot—Groundhog Day at the Louvre—and truly ran with it! This disorienting cover brilliantly utilizes shapes, colors, and the Mona Lisa to create a piece of art that looks like it’s straight out of an episode of Black Mirror. What makes END OF THE WORLD HOUSE even more exquisite is that not only is there an eye-catching cover but the author, Adrienne Celt, designed the book’s interior art!
Scientist Alex has almost abandoned his family to complete his research on gene-edited super-algae in this epic reflection on the junction of Big Tech and climate change.
When the Son sisters, creators of the massive tech corporation Sensus, offer him the chance to finish his research, he jumps at the chance.
The catch?
His laboratory will be located on Parallaxis, the world's first luxury residential space station for millionaires.
I initially learned about A HOUSE BETWEEN EARTH AND THE MOON from a Facebook ad, and I'd want to thank the algorithm for correctly predicting my interest in this book.
The optical illusion on the cover is incredible; I feel like I could reach out and touch it.
