Another good year for Copenhagen, as a restaurant in the Danish capital has been named the best in the world at the World's 50 Best Restaurants awards for the second year in a row.
Geranium serves a meat-free, seasonally focused Scandi menu on the eighth floor of Denmark's national soccer stadium. It's only open four days a week, a decision made by head chef Rasmus Kofoed and co-owner Sren Ledet to maintain a work-life balance ethos.
The two friends rejoiced as they received their award during a lavish ceremony held Monday night in London's Old Billingsgate, a Victorian building that was once the world's largest fish market. On what was the hottest day of the year in the UK, Hollywood actor and CNN host Stanley Tucci hosted the ceremony, resplendent in a white tuxedo jacket.
Restaurants can only win the top prize once, after which they are entered into a separate "Best of the Best" program. Geranium's Copenhagen neighbor Noma, as well as New York's Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and Mirazur in Menton, France, are all members of that elite group.

South American restaurants fared well as well. In Lima, chefs Virgilio Martnez and Pa León's Central rose two spots to second place, while Maido, which serves Japanese-Peruvian fusion, fell to 11th place.
A Casa do Porco, a celebration of all things porcine from Brazil, rose ten places to No. 7.
Spain's performance this year was also strong. Disfrutar in Barcelona was ranked third, Diverxo in Madrid was ranked fourth, and Asador Etxebarri in Larrabetzu, where all dishes, including dessert, are flame-grilled, was ranked sixth.
Mexico City was represented by fifth-place winner Pujol, this year's Best Restaurant in North America, and Quintonil, which climbed from 27th to 9th place last year.
This year, Lido 84 and Le Calandre in Italy both rose in the rankings. Uliassi, in Italy's Senigallia region, was this year's Highest New Entry, ranking 12th.
It isn't until No.20 that an Asian restaurant appears, with Den in Tokyo earning the highest spot on this year's list.
No restaurant outside of Europe or North America has ever won the World's 50 Best award in the 20 years the awards have been running. So far, winners have come from Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Italy, and France.
