The Gray Man

The Gray Man is a star-studded thriller about warring assassins, which stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling and has been written and directed by the crew behind Avengers: Endgame. It should be more fun than it is but, given the money spent on the film (some $200m), it looks fantastic. Netflix will be hoping that this is one movie of many, aiming to create a franchise out of the story.

Truth And Lies: The Last Gangster

While this one was previously available on Hulu, The Last Gangster has now arrived in the UK, courtesy of Disney Plus, and is a riveting documentary that provides a rare look behind the scenes of the mafia in the United States. Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, a real-life former hitman, explains the inner workings of The Gambino family and the cost of being in the mafia on him and others.

The Last Movie Stars

Ethan Hawke directs this fascinating documentary about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, a rare Hollywood power couple who stayed together for 50 years until Newman's death.

Hawke's documentary is a six-part look at the couple and their time in Hollywood, using archival footage, interviews (over Zoom, which dates this as a pandemic creation), and clips from Newman and Woodward's numerous films.

The most fascinating aspect of this is that Hawke has the transcripts of what was supposed to be Newman's autobiography - and he gets his Hollywood friends, including George Clooney, to 'act out' the action from these scripts. It makes for an intimate documentary, and Hawke is open about admitting that he is figuring it out as he goes along, which adds to the intrigue.

Victoria's Secret: Angels and Demons

Another damning expose of what was once one of America's most prestigious brands (see also the recent documentary White Hot, which is all about Abercrombie & Fitch's rise and fall), and this one is difficult to watch. With Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Jean-Luc Brunel among those mentioned, this is a gruesome look at what happens to women in a billion-dollar industry that is almost entirely run by men.

Resident Evil

We weren't expecting to enjoy this one as much as we did, but the new Resident Evil TV series manages to pack enough gore and cliffhangers into its episodes that you'll want more. The plot tries to stay true to the video games, with the ever-excellent Lance Reddick playing The Umbrella Corporation's Dr Albert Wesker. We see action in both 2022 and 2036, depicting the aftermath and events leading up to a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. While it's a bit of a mess in places, there's still plenty of fun to be had.
