Taylor Swift won the top honor at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday before revealing a surpisingly significant announcement: the release of her upcoming album.
After winning video of the year for "All Too Well: The Short Film," which won best long form video, Swift said, "I thought it would be a nice opportunity to remind you that my new album comes out on October 21." "I will tell you more at midnight."
Swift said on social media that her upcoming 10th studio album, "Midnights," will be the follow-up to "Folklore" and "Evermore," which were both published two years apart and featured "tales of 13 sleepless nights spread throughout my life." The album of the year at the 2021 Grammy Awards was "Folklore."
The pop artist revealed it towards the conclusion of her award speech, during which she also thanked Olivia Rodrigo and Doja Cat for winning the category.
She stated, "I know with every breath I take that without you, the fans, we wouldn't have been able to make this short film. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have the confidence to record my albums again.
She talked about making her first short film and thanked everyone who helped, particularly the project's stars, Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien.
Swift stated, "We have given this our all.
Rapper Jack Harlow left his touch on the entire production. The rapper joined Fergie onstage as she sung her 2006 hit while wearing a shimmering silver dress with the words "First Class" in red. He began his performance inside a faux airplane walking down aisle while performing his popular song "First Class," which was sampled by Fergie's "Glamorous."
After "First Class" won the prize for song of the summer later in the show, Harlow thanked Fergie for accompanying her and clearing the song. The inclusion of Fergie in this form means the world to me because "Glamorous" was one of the most significant songs of my childhood. The beauty of this song is that many don't know how hip-hop it is because of the sampling.
Nearly three months after the ruling in his defamation battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp made an unexpected appearance as the Moon Man during the event. The actor, 59, floated from the ceiling while donning the iconic astronaut suit and having his face digitally added to the helmet.
Depp addressed the audience at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, "And you know what? I needed the work."
Taylor Swift was forced to get up and dance when Lizzo sang her brand-new song, "2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)." Lizzo got an award for best music video for "About Damn Time."
When Harlow's name was announced, he returned to the stage to accept the first prize for best collaboration for his guest performance on Lil Nas X's song "Industry Baby." With seven each, Lil Nas X and Harlow are tied for the most nominations.
Lil Nas X stated, "This one is for the champs," before Harlow praised him for working with him on the number-one song. Their nominations were boosted by the song, which put them up against Drake, Bad Bunny, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, and Lizzo for artist of the year.
Along with singing and receiving accolades, Harlow served as one of the show's hosts alongside LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj.
After her set, the rapper accepted the show's Video Vanguard award, which MTV has said she is receiving for her artistry, boundary-breaking hip-hop, and status as a global superstar. Minaj performed a medley of her career's biggest hits from "Roman's Revenge," "Chun-Li," "Moment 4 Life," "Beez in the Trap," "Anaconda," and "Super Bass." The award bears Michael Jackson's name.
Minaj paid homage to various musicians during her acceptance speech, including Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson. She discussed the significance of mental wellness.
Minaj, who subsequently won best hip-hop for her song "Do We Have a Problem?" with Lil Baby, remarked, "I wish people took mental health seriously, especially when you think they have the greatest lives.
Because of his performance at Madison Square Garden in New York, Harry Styles, who won album of the year for "Harry's House," was unable to attend the ceremony.
After being named artist of the year, Bad Bunny played his smash song "Titi Me Pregunto" live from Yankee Stadium.
"I have been saying it, and I always thought that I could become great from the beginning," he stated. I am Benito Antonio Martnez from Puerto Rico to the world, thank you! That I might become one of the biggest stars in the world without having to change my culture, language, or vocabulary!
When they performed "From the D 2 The LBC," which can be found on Eminem's greatest hits album "Curtain Call 2," Snoop Dogg and Eminem took the metaverse to the VMAs.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, comprised of Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante, took the stage as the winners of the Global Icon award and were introduced by Cheech & Chong as their "favorite band of all time." The band performed several songs, including their hit "Can't Stop" from the group's 2002 album "By the Way" and their most recent hit "Black Summer," which won best rock.
Flea gave a speech about how much he loved people, cockroaches, trees, and dirt. The award was given as a tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins by the band's drummer, Smith, who passed away in January.
He said, "I dedicate this to Taylor and his family." I adore them and mourn him constantly.
Madonna, the artist with the most awards in MTV history (20 wins), is the only one to be nominated for a VMA in each of the five decades. As a result of her 14th studio album, "Madame X," she received her 69th nomination.
