It's the ideal time to honor the greatest hip hop and rap albums of all time. Hip hop will celebrate its 50th birthday next year. Clive Campbell, also known as DJ Kool Herc, hosted a birthday party in the recreation room of an apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the west Bronx, New York City.
Today, it is home to some of the world's most vital and culturally relevant music.

Top hip hop albums
Eminem - The Marshal Mathers LP
Year: 2000
For eons, the idea of a credible white rapper was a farce, aided by Vanilla Ice. All of that changed with the arrival of Eminem. A confrontational, provocative, and sardonic wordsmith - and another Dr. Dre protégé - he released three classic albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Marshal Mathers LP, released in the middle, best captured the band's witty, irreverent, and rebellious spirit.
The Real Slim Shady is the main track.
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Year: 2004
Kanye West is known today for his bizarre celebrity lifestyle as much as his music (which, by the way, still rocks), but a decade ago, West was a serious underground hip hop icon. West's true calling was rapping himself, having given Jay-Z new life with his production work on The Blueprint. With the release of The College Dropout, any doubts about his ability to match his Roc-a-Fella boss were quickly dispelled. It set in motion the merry-go-round that West still expertly deals in today, a vivacious album dripping in hooks and cheeky raps.
Through The Wire is a key track.
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Year: 1996
Jay-Z is the most well-known active hip hop artist today. In 1996, he was just another aspiring rapper who had led a hardscrabble life on the streets of New York. This hustle was the foundation of his fantastic debut set. It was a stunning combination of frontline reportage and frankly ice cool rhymes, featuring Can't Knock The Hustle, Brooklyn's Finest, and Dead Presidents II. A new star had emerged.
Dead Presidents II is a standout track.
Scarface - The Fix
Year: 2002
Few musicians release their seminal work seven albums in. Even less so in the fast-paced world of hip hop, where youthful bravado always triumphs over maturity. Scarface, on the other hand, is unique. As a businessman and a recording artist, he understands his audience and can give them what they want. And The Fix is a prime example of this. From start to finish, it's a high-octane ride into the rags'n'riches lifestyle of hip hop hustlers.
In Cold Blood is a key track.
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Ghostface Killah's sophomore effort is an absolute wonder after proving to the world that he was one of the best lyricists and rappers around with his marvelous verses on 36 Chambers, Only Built For Cuban Lynx, and his debut Iron Man. Ghostface effortlessly weaves grit and candor, stupidity and absurdity into his tracks, delivering a gold-gilded hip-hop album that is still relevant today. I just called Malcolm to let him know.
Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique
Year: 1989
Although Licensed To Ill introduced the world to the Beastie Boys, the group was routinely dismissed as brattish frat rappers after its release. Paul's Boutique, released nearly three years ago, proved otherwise, demonstrating that Mike D, Ad-Rock, and MCA possessed the necessary skills. It was criminally ignored upon its initial release, most likely because it wasn't Licensed To Ill Part 2; however, it is now recognized for what it is: a multi-layered hip hop masterpiece.
Shake Your Rump is the main track.
