Best Amazon Prime Original Series
The Marvelous Miss Maisel
It was about time for Rachel Brosnahan to shine on a show. The Marvelous Miss Maisel sees her in fantastic form as a 1950s housewife who decides to one day become a stand-up comic after bit parts in movies and a stint on House of Cards. There's a lot to like about the show, but Brosnahan's main performance as 'Midge' Maisel steals the show - her transformation when she finally gets on stage is incredible to watch.
Vikings
On the surface, Vikings appears to be a one-dimensional show: an entire show based on the pillaging, conquering, and brutal world of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok. But this isn't Game of Thrones on a shoestring. The character development in the first three seasons is superb, and Vikings tells a simple story extremely well, even up to season six.
Mr. Robot
It may seem trite to heap more praise on a show that is almost universally adored, but the thing is (with a wry smile to the camera), they're right. Phoebe Waller-adaptation Bridge's of her own one-woman stage show is simultaneously stunningly crass, utterly hilarious, and tear-jerking. Yes, Waller-Bridges is perfect as Fleabag, but the rest of the cast is equally as good, with characters that have been rounded out with surgical precision.
The Man In The High Castle
The Man in the High Castle was one of the first Prime Video Originals, lasting four seasons and ending at the end of 2019. It's a fantastic-looking show based on Philip K. Dick's novel about a parallel universe in which the Nazis win and the consequences for the world. The show deviates from the book by the end, but it's well worth the effort.
Invincible
With this existential look at superheroes and what their powers do to relationships, Robert Kirkman has done it again. Mark Grayson is the son of Omni-Man, the world's most powerful superhero. Grayson, now 17, is poised to follow in his father's footsteps as he develops special abilities, but all is not as it appears.
The Patriot
It's not a show about Mel Gibson's big-screen vehicle, but rather a darkly comic show about a spy tasked with preventing Iran from going nuclear. Unfortunately, there are only two seasons because Amazon cancelled it, but they are a refreshing watch, balancing fun and frenetic action, and, to be honest, we'd watch RoboCop's Kurtwood Smith in anything.
The Exorcist (film)
We are as surprised as you are that The Exorcist show is good, but it is. Each season tells a different exorcism story, taking cues from the William Peter Blatty novel but reimagining it for a modern audience. The first season is the most similar to the novel (in terms of the characters in the series), but both seasons are equally fantastic and full of chills.
Undone
Following the success of Netflix's Bojack Horseman, creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg moved to Amazon for Undone, an animated show that employs rotoscoping to achieve its distinct look. Undone explores some of the same themes as Bojack, albeit in a much more dramatic manner; its trippy visuals lend the film an unreal feel, and it stars Bob Odenkirk, Daveed Diggs, and Rosa Salazar.
The second season of Undone is now available on Netflix and is just as bizarre as the first. This show is shaping up to be one of the best Amazon Prime series available.
Too Old To Die Young
His foray into television is as superb as it is brutal, despite his reputation for ultraviolent films such as Drive and Only God Forgives. Although Refn prefers to think of Too Old To Die Young as an extended film, it's been divided into 12 manageable 'episodes,' following a cop played by Miles Teller on a revenge spree, ridding the world of some very unsavoury characters. This is uncompromising, unflinching entertainment at its finest.
